Marking Time | Original Oil Painting on Canvas
24 × 30 + floating wood frame
We looked at beautiful houseboats and expensive yachts, and as we wandered, a little rowboat caught my eye. It was wedged next to a sailboat that had seen better days. As we walked closer, I could see these two boats were well loved, a little worse for the wear, but most of all - still active. Peeling paint and new boards nailed over dilapidated ones meant this boat was determined. They live life. They pursue the open water. They have faced adversity and have the scars to show for it. But they keep on, keeping on. They float next to fancy boats, but their stories are written in the wooden reflection and fraying canvas. As I watch my tiny boy, who somehow grew into a six foot body, I hope he's starting a life that eventually becomes a threadbare boat. One that is full of risks and adventure, wanderlust and comfort. One that holds enough living to wear down the edges into smooth and familiar wood railings. One where tattered oars still get him where he wants to go, but every mark and dent tells a story. I hope he's embarking on the first chapter of an incredible story.
Oil paintings are created with an underpainting and finished with an Alla Prima technique. Oil paintings are created with artist grade paints, canvas, solvents and oils. All edges are also hand-painted with a continuation of the artistic subject, rather than masked edges, resulting in a beautiful raised look that will look professional both framed or unframed. Dry times for oil paintings last 1 year or more and have been completed.

Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, one might say I’ve become fixated on the landscape surrounding me. Rainy beaches, soft waves that are protected by distant shorelines, sun-laden coves of trees and an endless sky of clouds - it’s all a boundless muse. This current collection of works were painted over the course of several months, during a storm season that defines a new normal, affected by climate change. I used brushstrokes, lines, shapes and color embody emotion within the vastness of these landscapes. I am calling this series “Devotion”.
